So. I know what I'm doing this weekend.

My summer's shaping up to be a good one. Ella and I are going to fly back home soon. Well... sort of. Her family's in Nashville, and mine's in North Carolina, so we're flying back together and then spending time with our families. I love my life here in LA but I also love my family to pieces, and I can't wait to hang out with my littlest cousin, who I think is just starting to get into everything. I wonder if I could teach him how to skateboard, and if my auntie would be okay with that. ;)

Also, we're getting busy at the Philharmonic, too. We've teamed up with the Hollywood Bowl AND Josh Groban (that guy is fantastic, man. Not just as a singer. He's freakin' hilarious too) -- we're having a big event on the 4th of July. Concert, fireworks, the whole bit - and it's for more than one day! So if you don't have any other plans, you should come out. Just saying. It'll be awesome.

And of course, between work and spending time with Ella, I plan to surf as much as I can this summer. Yup. It's already beach weather and I love it!

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. Today is kind of bittersweet since my mother died when I was eleven, and my aunt that I've considered my mother ever since is all the way out in North Carolina. I did send her flowers, though, and Skyped with everyone over there. It's days like today that I really miss my family. I did also take my grandma out, though. I think she appreciated it. I hope she did, anyway.

No one tells you when you're an adult that there suddenly aren't enough hours in the day to do everything (no Daylight Saving Time jokes intended). Don't get me wrong - I love both my jobs, spending time with my Ella, and being here in LA but I feel like things have fallen by the wayside. My little cousin is growing up so fast and I'm not there to see it. And this thing! I feel like I don't know half of you on here.

And if you feel the same way - hi, my name's Matt. You might see me around if a) you go to any of the UCLA hospitals and b) I get bored and set up at 3rd Street Promenade for a few hours.

Can't believe it's the end of January already. There's been a lot going on, I guess. Work is busy since lots of babies are sick (it's that season, I guess) and I myself got pretty sick a few weeks ago. The perils of working in health care. But I'm better. I've gotten much better at spraying things with Lysol now.

In other news... one of the principal violinists in the LA Philharmonic announced his retirement in a few months, so there will be an open spot! I know there's going to be plenty of competition for that spot but I'm thinking of maybe auditioning for it. I know the people who run the Philharmonic so there's at least that. I probably don't have much of a shot, but anything's possible!

Wow, it's almost Christmas. How did that happen? I guess it's just been a busy season.

I'm flying home tomorrow to be with my family for Christmas. It's my little cousin's first Christmas so that is exciting. I'm sure all the girls will be having fun with that, but at least our numbers are a little more even now.

I got an opportunity a few nights ago to do something awesome. Disneyland does a performance thing every Christmas - it's the telling of the Christmas story and some of the members of the LA Philharmonic go and play in the orchestra sometimes. I've been practicing with them and helping them organize that stuff and I took a copy of the music (shh) just for fun. But then something came up with one of the first chair violinists and she couldn't fulfill her performances so she asked me if I could sub in, and I did! It was so awesome. It's a whole different Disneyland experience and I loved it. I'm going to have to see if I can do it again next year.

I hope everyone has a good Christmas (or holiday, whatever you celebrate).

Pretty crazy how it still feels like July when it's already October, huh? I don't remember it ever getting this hot before. I like the warm weather, but this is ridiculous. Oh well. It could be worse.

My birthday was a few weeks ago (the 18th) and it was pretty chill. It was a pretty normal day for me - went to work, hung out with my girlfriend, got a little surfing in, so I was excited. I've settled into a routine at work (both jobs). Christmas season is coming up for the Philharmonic so there's lots going on for that. If you're interested in a show, let me know. I'll hook you up with tickets. And at my other job, I was working with the teens the other day, and a girl who's got a pretty aggressive disease wanted me to play her a Taylor Swift song. She's lucky I have three sisters. She told me she loves to sing and that when (not if) she beats this thing she's going to try and become a singer. We pretty much had a jam session and I was glad that I was able to take her mind off of her troubles at least for an afternoon.

Lazy Saturday mornings in California are so nice. I'd forgotten.

Anyway, it's been a few weeks since I moved back here and life is great! Ella got a new cat and she's adorable. (Well, the cat. Ella's adorable too though. :D) Work is pretty cool, too. I get to meet all kinds of people and patients and I'm glad to say that nearly all of them seem to like when I play music for them. I usually play guitar, since most people like guitar and it's easier to play songs that are recognizable, but once in a while people will ask me to play my violin. Plus, I also get to play with kids and have them make their own music, too. I have some stiff competition with the pet therapists, though. I can't blame them, though. Some of those dogs are so lovable.

It's turning out to be quite the beach day so I may dig out my surfboard and head over soon :)
